Dia de los Muertos or Day of the Dead, is a historic event. It is celebrated all around Latin America, Mexico, and also the U.S. It is a two day holiday celebrated on November 1st - 2nd. It is a combination of Catholic and Native American traditions It is a celebration to celebrate loved ones who are deceased. Many celebrate with a traditional altar or ofrenda. On this they have specific objects that are traditional to ones Altar.
Candles- to welcome the spirits to the altar and to light their way back.
Marigolds- The smell of these small flowers attract the spirit to the altar.
Photo- This is placed in the prime spot of the altar and is a photo of the person to whom the altar is dedicated.
Sugar Skulls- Skulls made out of sugar to symbolize death and the after life, But in a happy way.
Food and Objects- Food or Objects that the person liked to eat or to symbolize what the deceased liked to do.
Those are the more traditional objects to have on an Altar. There are many more pieces of art that one can incorporate to make their Altar beautiful.
For my Altar I chose to celebrate my Dads old dog Moonshine. She was a dog of my family for a long time but she was originally my dads dog. I chose to write and celebrate her because she was an amazing member of the family and we all loved her so much and it was nice to show my dad how much I appreciated her by celebrating her. On my altar I had a photo of my dad with Moonshine. I had a custom made sugar skull below it. I had two sets of marigolds beside the picture and skull. I had multiple candles placed around my Altar. I had her food bowl, leash, and collar to symbolize who she was and what she liked to do. I was proud building and exhibiting this Altar because I wanted to show how much she leaned to me and my family, and it was amazing to see my dads reaction when he saw it.
Overall I felt really proud about my altar and who I decided to celebrate. I had a lot of fun creating this beautiful altar.

💜En memoria de Moonshine💜
Se llamaba Moonshine. Ella era la perro de mi familia. Ella era de New York, era el perro de mi padre. Ella vivía en New York y Colorado.
She died in deep sleep very very peacefully.
She had a wonderful life, way better than any dog could ever dream
My entire family adored her, and she will be remembered forever.

This was our final project in Spanish 1 freshman year. This project was about spreading our spanish writing and sharing it with others. That is why we each wrote books in story jumper and sent them off to rural communities in Nicaragua. Our goal is to share your writing and help grow the education of young students in another country. This process started with with a pencil and drafting any idea you had. Two other peers and I had the idea to write individual books but it would be part of a trilogy. There are two main characters who are animals: Pepe and Berto who are a pig and donkey. These go gone on multiple adventures and it ends up getting them in trouble. We started collaborating and coming up with these original, silly stories. And the end result was great. After drafting on paper and critiques we turned to our second draft on a doc. Once that step was completed it was time to turn to the final writing piece and illustrations. In the end the final product was great and they have gotten sent off to the kids. Hopefully they will receive them and it will bring joy to their communities.
