Description/Reflection:
This was an interdisciplinary project between Humanities and Chemistry. In Humanities we studied the ethics of food in America, and In Chemistry we studied the chemistry behind cooking food.
Our project in Humanities was to form our own food ethic based off of texts we read or watched. We learned a lot about the food industries, both industrial and organic, how they compared, and the difference between how they processed their foods. We read "Omnivores Dilemma" by Michael Pollan, a book about the two industries and how their ethics compare. In the book we observed the authors ethic develop and it helped us develop ours. Our final product was an ethic essay in which we wrote about how our food ethic has grown throughout our life and where it is now.
Our project in Chemistry was to create a food recipe where we had to manipulate an ingredient to change the taste or composition of the food. We had to research the chemistry behind our food and the chemical reaction that took place during the cooking process. Our final product was either a recipe car, containing ingredients, steps, and the science behind our experiment, or a scientific paper containing a more in-depth analysis. The interdisciplinary nature of this project to me made the project as a whole more interesting. I enjoyed how both classes had something new to add to the project but they still related to each other. While developing our ethic in Humanities we were able to create our recipe and manipulate it based off how our ethics changed. I personally developed my experiment in chemistry based off of how I was developing my ethic in Humanities. Having two classes focusing on this big idea from two different sides kept me engaged in my learning and made me more aware of the food in our world and what I choose to do with it.

I had a lot of takeaways from this project, mainly being my understanding of the food industry. I learned so many new things that I had no idea about going into this project. For instance, how much corn we use in products, the difference between organic and industrial, and the ethics behind them. I didn't think this project would be very interesting at the beginning but as it progressed I got super invested. I have began to question how I eat, and what I eat and I have been more aware since the start of this project. I have not eaten fast food since the start, and I have read the ingredient of what I eat more precisely. I do not know if this will last but at least this project has changed my food moral and the way I eat for the time beginning, and I believe it is a lot better for me.
