Sophomore inspire week was a week for the sophomores where we would learn and participate in community service projects to help us prepare for LINK and College. There was a variety of Community service projects from many nonprofit organizations in Durango. Some of these businesses were: Boys & Girls Club, La Plata Youth Services, Trails 2000, Escalante Middle School, Durango Nature Studies, and Durango Public Library. To prepare for these projects we first learned about Resume writing, what to include in a resume, and how to write it (If you would like to view my resume click the button below). We also took a couple Career Interest surveys (If you would like to view mine click the button below). Our final product for this week was a video about our project, who we worked with, and what we did. This video would be uploaded to our ZeeMee accounts which is a social media platform specifically for colleges. To view my ZeeMee scroll down and see...
For my project, I chose to work with La Plata Youth Services because I wanted to connect with the youth of Durango. While I did get to do just that, I was a little surprised by the amount of work, and the amount of knowledge I gained throughout the week. I did not expect what really happened. A group of about 10 sophomores including myself was put to the task to plan for a Youth voice project/ event for the youth of La Plata County to finally have a voice, connect with other youth, and finally feel like they have a purpose. We felt like not enough youth have had the chance to propose an idea such as ours to the community. We came up with and proposed an event that would take place after the school year of 2018 and would be a day for the youth. This event would include many activities at Buckley park for the youth to take part in challenges and events. The day would start with a march down Main Street where the youth (mostly 14-18) would walk down showing their strength and courage to our community. The March would be lead by our Youth sports groups such as Skaters, and DEVO. It would give them a chance to finally express themselves. This day would also include a stage with music by our local youth band and an open mic. This mic would be open for any young adult to come up and share a story, song, or poem about what they go through daily, and just what their parents don't know and how they can help. It brings honesty and bravery to our youth and finally gives them a voice in our community.

I felt like this week brought a lot to my character and was very beneficial to all sophomores. It really opened my mind up to the possibilities and opportunities I really get as a young adult. I thought learning about my skills and careers through the Career Interest Surveys helped me a lot with realizing how much potential I have for great things. I got to see careers that I was personally interested in and some I would have never expected to show up. Writing a professional resume got me to dig into what I have done for the community before and put it on a document that I would be refining, editing, and adding more to for the rest of my life for jobs. The real takeaway for me was the group of people who I worked with for this project and what we were able to propose and come up with. I got to connect with old friends and new and strengthen friendships. I am super proud of the work we were able to accomplish, and I really think that this idea could turn into something real. Because we were all so proud and excited for this, we have decided to keep in touch and continues working on this project for the rest of the year. We have already spoken with many community representatives and continue to meet with several more and spread the word about our amazing event. Along with the friendship building and community serving, this week was an amazing experience for all sophomores and should be something that Animas High School continues to do every year. With the community service projects, resume writing, and career workshops, Sophomore Inspire Week was definitely an inspiration for me!
