Reflection:
This semester has been a warm-up for me for what I hope to accomplish next semester, I'll touch on that in a bit. I have written two articles, one a news piece about senior internships, and a feature(still in the works) about Stephen Sellers and his filmmaking career on top of teaching. On top of writing for the Quill, I have been interning with The Local News Network here in town. I have been producing broadcast stories for them as well and I plan to partner them with the quill next semester. To contribute more to the Quills' success I have led a couple of meetings where our staff brainstormed some potential stories and discussed who would take on what. I personally would have wanted to contribute a little more to the quill this semester. This was also an application season for me and a lot of my energy and stress was because of college, this made my level of participation for the quill suffer just a little bit, but not to the level where I felt like I did nothing.
Over the years I have learned a lot of journalism, I took this class for my first two years here at Animas, however, did not learn too much about how to write like a journalist, more than just how to write in general. Outside of school, I have learned so much about broadcast journalism, through summer camps and internships. Through my own experiences, I found my passion for broadcast journalism. This semester we focused on learning how to report and write print stories, whether they were news, feature, or op-ed. I learned more about print journalism this semester than I had my first two years here. I could tell Jessica was super passionate about this topic and she made the lessons interesting. I learn how to structure a story, and how to expand it for the audience's pleasure. Sometimes I do find myself getting a little confused because writing for print and broadcast are very different, and because I know broadcast so well, my print stories come out sounding like a TV script. This isn't bad in theory but I would like to differentiate the two, which I am still currently working on.
I have big plans for next semester, this will contribute highly to the Quills' success, contribute to their success in the future, and hopefully be somewhat of my legacy. In my last two years, a group of peers and I produced bi-weekly shows called “The Friday Show”. These videos would contain news for our school about upcoming events and announcements, as well as provide comedy to the school community. Some shows were a great success, while others kind of “flopped”. This year The Friday Show was absorbed into the quill, however, nothing has been produced as of yet. I plan to work with The Quill and Local News Network to create a brand new broadcast news organization for Animas High School. Similar to The Friday Show, however, this would focus on the news in our community. The comedy piece would most likely be separated because I want to use everything I have learned throughout the last couple of years and create something that can be easily accessible for anyone. I would create backgrounds, transitions, middle thirds, everything that a news broadcast has and start producing stories for Animas, and that could potentially be used for Local News as well. These broadcasts would be sent out weekly and would air on Durango cable Channel 15. We already have a studio where we could record, the mac in Jessica's room could be the editing area, and journalism would be a perfect time for anyone on the quill to work on that as well. This way the Friday Show lives on and the Quill branches out into new areas, spreading the news of Animas even further than we already have. I still plan to write and produce stores, both for the Quill and Local News Network, but this would be my main goal.
As far as what grade I believe I deserve for this semester, I would say either a B+ or A-. I have contributed to the quill, however, not as much as I would have hoped, due to other complications. However, my love for journalism is high and my plans for the Quill show how dedicated and hardworking I am and can be. I have written stories, largely participated in class discussions, and plan to go really big next semester.
