Reflection/Self-Assessment
Reflection:
1. To what extent did I choose an issue that I genuinely care about?I chose immigration for my issue, not a specific part about immigration, but the topic in general. My mom is an immigrant and she has expressed some concerns in recent years so I thought this would be a great topic for me. While I was interested in researching this topic, as I got deeper I felt myself get less invested in the issue. I think this is because I didn't know where I wanted to go with it. I wanted to focus on injustice with immigrants who are already citizens of the U.S., however I did not find a lot on this, it was more about how the immigrants are good for the economy or information on the immigration reform. I tried to work with what I found and I eventually figured it out but I just felt myself losing interest in this topic as I progressed.
2. How does my proposal align with my own strengths, interests, especially in light of what I’m thinking about doing for my action project for Senior Project? My proposal outlined everything I wanted to do for my senior action project as well as outlined my interests/strengths. I love film, journalism, and broadcast journalism. I have been thinking about making a documentary for my senior project ever since freshman year and I got to “mock” that idea for my proposal for this project. A documentary is a “broadcast journalism” film, and because that alone includes all those interests of mine, the proposal aligned with my strengths, and interests for Senior Project.
3. What did I learn from this process that will help me with my senior project?
- Research skills?
- Ways of being effective in making an impact?
4. What was the most valuable/informative/interesting part of this assignment?Researching in Part 1 I found very valuable and informative. I learned a lot of research skills and note taking tricks that helped me organize and use my notes wisely. I will remember these skills I learned. I also found writing a proposal was interesting and different. It was a nice warm up and introduction to senior project. I felt like taking the information you found and proposing an idea/action project based on this was very useful.
5. What is one thing I could have done to improve this project the most?I feel like choosing an issue felt abrupt. I know that there might not be much there could be done to improve this. However, I feel like maybe if there was a brainstorm/activity students could do to help them discover an issue they are passionate about and that they want to research for this project. I also feel like the Throughline Podcast assignment or Part 0 didn't have a place in this project. Throughout the rest of the project I never referenced back to the podcast I heard. Now, I do understand that if someone found a podcast that had to do with their issue they probably found it very useful. I just feel like it would not impact this project all that much if the podcast assignment was cut. This is just my opinion though. I didn't hate this assignment, I just didn't find as much use in it as others probably did.
